University of Birmingham is a well-established university with over 25,000 students. More than 7,000 students are working at postgraduate level and there is a major emphasis on research. In the 2001 Research Assessment Exercise, 39 disciplines were rated as of international standing. There are 29 Schools encompassing almost every discipline: in the arts and humanities, social sciences, law, engineering, medicine and health sciences, and science. The University's annual turnover (2003-2004) is over £310 million, including very substantial support for research from industry, trusts, foundations and the major charities.
