University of Delhi
Established in 1922, the University of Delhi is the largest
university in India with more than 300,000 students and about 7,000
teachers. Its strong commitment to excellence in teaching and research
has made it a role model and path-setter for universities in India.
Located across the city, its 78 colleges cater to the needs of
undergraduate students while its 84 departments are mostly for
postgraduate students. Its alumni have taken on the roles of heads of
state, union ministers, governors of states, ambassadors and
constitutional authorities.
For the University of Delhi, the period since 2000 has been one of
academic renaissance and consolidation which included the addition of
new infrastructure. The first major restructuring of all undergraduate
programmes since their inception many decades ago has been carried out
while a system of internal assessment for all undergraduate and
postgraduate programmes has been put in place. Provisions have also
been made for the institution of short-term courses in colleges. The
process of establishing a well-equipped Biotechnology Park has been
initiated while the Campus of Open Learning has been established for
distance education. The University of Delhi has long been aware of its
role in a larger international academic community, and has been
reaching out to fraternal institutions in different parts of the world
for collaborative programmes.
