The University of Virginia
The University of Virginia was founded in 1819 by Thomas
Jefferson in Charlottesville at the foothills of the Blue Ridge
Mountains. It is consistently ranked among the top public universities
in the United States. The Jefferson-designed Rotunda, Pavilions, Ranges
and Lawn constitute perhaps the most architecturally significant
central setting for any university in the country. The University
embodies the American ideal of education, training leaders in an
environment foster in excellence in both research and undergraduate
teaching. Enrolment is 18,500 undergraduate and graduate students in
the following schools: architecture, arts and sciences, commerce,
education, engineering, graduate business, law, medicine and nursing.
The University also conducts numerous off-campus programs both in the
United States and abroad through its school of continuing and
professional studies. A distinguished faculty, numbering more than
1,900 full-time members, has received honors and awards in many fields
of endeavour.
